In one class the participants will design and create a simple leather mask. It is easy and fun! I will teach how shape and water harden with 2-3 oz veg tanned leather. Everyone brings in an idea or image of a simple mask design they like. From that we will adapt the design and make a paper template, which is then drawn onto the leather and cut out. The mask is then soaked in solution, partially dried, and formed by the use of fingers and tools. It will need 24 hrs to harden after the class, before it can be painted, dyed or ornamented with horse hair, feathers, shells, glitter, or ? We will have a second class a week later for that part!
The same techniques can be used to make jewellery; wrist cuffs,head bands, tiaras, gauntlets, or even items of armour.
Ideas for the masks are almost endless- animals, mythological creatures, bandits monsters, elf ears, fairies, leaves…It is a great chance to play with characters and alter egos!
Please bring scissors, a towel (that can get dirty) a pencil, stiff paper (construction paper works well) and one or more ideas or images of masks you like. I will have a file of images on hand for people who can not find their own or would like to use a template of one I have already made.
The class is about three hours long. Suitable for nine and up. Parents are welcome to work together with their children .
Please register via email soon, as Halloween and the Day of the Dead approach these classes will fill up! Only 6 students in each class.

Hi — I live in New Brunswick. My friends and I visited Salt Spring Island and bought two masks from Andrea, which we lost in an airport washroom :(. I want to replace the masks — how can I place an order with Andrea? (Wish I could attend the workshop!)
