Opening Night Masterpiece Weekend Show
Suzanne Little | Jun 20, 2009
I attended the opening reception last night of the Masterpiece Weekend show at Artspring and was so impressed by the concept and the work being displayed. A number of Salt Spring gallery owners got together and put on this joint exhibition. Each gallery had a few of their artists contribute one piece, and the result is a diverse and captivating show. I had quite a few favourites but I was particularly taken by a large painting that was a neutral, serene air and waterscape and was surprised to find out that it was the work of Robert Bateman – it was so unlike his well known wildlife paintings. Here are some clips of the reception:
Above: In the foreground, a sculpture by Salt Spring artist Peter Mcfarlane, one of my favourite local artists. On the wall behind you get a glimpse of the Robert Bateman painting I was describing above, and a little way along the wall a large show-stopping canvas by Randolf Parker. You’ll have to go see them in person to get an unobstructed view. Steffich Fine Art Gallery owner and event organizer Matt Steffich is in conversation here.
Above: In this clip J Mitchell Gallery sculpter Gerda Lattey discusses her piece.
Above: John Bateman and his wife Jocelyn Ferguson in discussion by John’s impressive sculpture in wood. Behind them on the wall you get a glimpse of photographer Stephen Friedman’s standout piece featuring zebra birch trees.

I am VERY sorry, indeed, to have missed this show!
