Salt Spring Cabin Featured in Dwell Magazine

Set an Salt Spring Island, the exterior metal skin of this single room cabin will be allowed to weather naturally. Inside, wood-finished surfaces create a cozy refuge. Outside a stunning outdoor shower. A large, weathered steel panel slides across a window wall, securing the space when the owner is away. The cabin is the work of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects with Photos by Tim Bies and is featured in the November edition of Dwell Magazine.

And the toilet is a cedar bucket?

    Love the simplicity.

  2. Julie Doobenen says:

Really appreciate the simplicity & integrity of this cabin! I envision one like this on my land to add to my spa and am jubilated with the potential of eco design!

thank you for your issues of DWELL,

heating a small space with woodheat can be quite the chore.
shows what could be done by way of shared land project using small private spaces and then a large community shared space .spare the wood heat for the community space.
wood stoves and transportation are the 2 major contributors to greenhouse gases on Saltspring.

  4. Dona Hunter says:

love the design, but would still want a toilet…a ceder bucket is not eco, it is unsanitary….what would you do with the waste…bury it?

  5. Dona Hunter says:

and by the way, where is the kitchen?

  6. Gaurang McIntyre says:

Compost toilets are easy to deal with by adding wood shavings the feces naturally composts itself and surprisingly no smell left behind. My friend has property on another island with a kayak camp and each cabin has a compost toilet – great setup! Then you have a designated area where the “waste” is dumped and you can then use it as a manure for gardens :)

  7. Clare Cullen says:

Love it! Really all a person needs.
Looks like the small kitchen and storage space is against the wall with the front door, just not shown in these pics.
I wonder about the cost of construction…any ideas?

Similar projects have been undertaken with success using shipping containers. Rot-proof, fire-proof, bug-proof, and with imagination make a very nice dwelling. Available from the ports in Victoria, or Vancouver. Easily delivered.

  9. Jeff Grant says:

Really cool…It would be better for life energy with bilogic architecture in the design though..90 degree corners create a destructive interference in the aura(incubation), where rounded or angular surfaces increase the wave phase conjugation, creating/sustaining life energy.
