Submitted by Deirdre Rowland

Dr. Joan Durrant, Professor of Family Social Sciences at the University of Manitoba, will speak at the Centre for Child Honouring on Thursday, February 4th.  Dr. Durrant is a leading expert in the prevention of child maltreatment. Her talk, “CHILD RIGHTS & POSITIVE DISCIPLINE: HONOURING the CHILD at HOME & at SCHOOL,” addresses the relevance of the UN Convention on the Rights of Child for parents and educators.

Founder of the new Centre for Child Honouring, Raffi Cavoukian says, “We’re delighted to present Dr. Durrant, a professor whose work aligns with Child Honouring principles of RESPECTFUL LOVE, CARING COMMUNITY, NONVIOLENCE and SAFE ENVIRONMENTS.  Dr. Durrant is passionate about the significance of the formative early years in building a foundation for healthy growth, development and learning throughout a child’s life.”

This informative event will be of special interest to parents and educators, emphasizing Dr. Durrant’s “positive discipline” from a child’s rights perspective. Discipline, in this view, is about learning, not punishment.

According to Dr. Durrant, “As a researcher, I have been deeply struck by the power of the Child Honouring principles to capture all that we have learned about the determinants of healthy child development.   They distil decades of research into a cohesive framework that can applied by parents struggling with child discipline, by communities trying to keep children safe, and by governments challenged to address social problems at their roots.  They are the essence of positive relationships in families and societies.”

The talk begins at 7pm at the Centre for Child Honouring, located at 291 Long Harbour Road. Due to limited seating, admission is by ticket, available (by donation) at Salt Spring Books and at the door.

The Centre for Child Honouring is a dynamic communications hub and educational facility founded to advance Child Honouring globally to help create a world fit for children.  For more information about the Centre please visit: www.childhonouring.org
