Beware The Bad Landlord
Description
Welcome to Saltspring Island, to those of you who are moving here, and Good day, to those who are already living here.
Looking for a new home?? Need a temporary place for a year or so? Watch out!!!! Sadly, There is a few landlords that will SAY anything to get your monthly income.
False promises of repairs to the home that never come to be.
Tales of people coming over to do work on the house.
Stories on how much work has already been done.
Avoidence when it comes to Maintainence that is THEIR responsibility, Unreturned phone calls,ETC ETC ETC
LIES LIES LIES!!!
When you see a rental come up:
Look at the home first
Inspect the yard.
Have the landlord inspect the home THE DAY YOU MOVE IN (so they know what condition their house is in, and you don’t get stuck with previous damages on moving out)
Request a report on the current condition of the septic system.
Hows the electrical in the home??? How much does it cost to heat and power an old house?? Water?? do you pay or them? Appliances, How are they working? will they replace them if they break? Just ask, If not , you could possibly be walking into a situation where you will loose your damage deposit, For something thats is not your FAULT!.
MAKE EVERYTHING CLEAR AND OPEN. GET WRITTEN AGREEMENTS. MAKE SURE YOUR NOT SIGNING ON WITH A SCHYSTER OF A LANDLORD. AND MAKE SURE YOUR GETTING A DECENT HOME AND A HONEST LANDLORD FOR THE AMOUNT YOU PAY EACH MONTH.
ASK AROUND, GET A REFERENCE CHECK ON THE LANDLORD. ASK FOR THE PREVIOUS TENANTS PHONE NUMBER AND TALK TO THEM.
Keep yourself in the clear.
Beware the bad Landlord.

Beware the bad tenant! Piles of trash left, holes in walls, unwilling to keep the place neat and tidy, borrowing your tools and stuff and not returning it…
There are two sides to every coin.
I appreciate you writing this Yan and the hard and sad truth of it is that due to the shortage of rentals here there is a strong possibility of a rental offer being revoked if one demands these things unless it is communicated in a calm, caring manner with the understanding that these things would be mutually beneficial to both parties.
I understand and empathize with Goat’s experience and my sense is that sometimes we are duped into misjudging character but generally there are many renters on SSI who would not leave a place in poor condition, especially if they felt they were being charged a reasonable rent for what they were being offered. A well cared for, affordable place will attract a conscientious and respectful tenant.
